We believe in SAVING. We are homeowners ourselves and we know the pains of monthly bills and overages. If we can save our customers money, time, and stress by spreading our knowledge, we definitely will. In our last post, we talked about staying cool and saving energy this summer because energy bills are no joke. You know what else isn’t a joke? Water bills. Water, especially in California, is a resource we try our very best not to waste, so here are 10 simple ways you can save water everyday!
1. USE YOUR DISHWASHER
Yes, really. Surprisingly enough, your dishwasher can use as little as 3 gallons of water for all your dishes vs. the up to 27 gallons you use to handwash on average. Scrape your food off your plates and throw them in to save. An extra tip is to only run the dishwasher when it is full as well, for obvious reasons.
2. SWITCH YOUR SHOWER HEAD TO A LOW FLOW
You can reduce your water bills by up to 60% just by switching to a newer head. The newer shower heads use approximately 2.5 gallons per minute as opposed to older ones at 5.5. If you don’t have the time for your typical DIY, ProFlo can help you make the switch.
3. TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS
We are all guilty of contemplating life in the shower from time to time, but the daily use of 30 minute showers can rack up your bill to obscene heights. Even taking two minutes off the regular shower time can make a huge difference in the price and saves 2.5 gallons per minute!
4. SHOWER INSTEAD OF BATHE
The Environmental Protection Agency says that it takes 35 gallons of water to fill an average bathtub. That is A LOT of wasted water. If your bills are high, cutting back on bathtime can be a huge game changer for your outgoing monthly bills. Taking a five minute shower with your previously mentioned low-flow showerhead can save you up to 22.5 gallons every time you need to rinse.
5. REPAIR YOUR LEAKY FAUCETS
We talk about this is almost every single one of our blog posts, but leaky faucets are a no-go. It is so important to stop that dripping as soon as possible. You could be wasting anywhere from 1000-2000 gallons of water per year just from a leaky faucet. Your pockets will thank you for the repair.
6. ADD AERATORS TO YOUR FAUCETS
An aerator attaches to the head of your faucets and forces air into the water stream. This will create a more forceful flow and reduce the amount of water you’re actually using. This attachment is relatively inexpensive and can save you up to 27 gallons per day!
7. USE A POINT-OF-USE WATER HEATER OR A KETTLE
We often run water in the kitchen in order to clean or boil water, etc. which will waste a lot of water as we wait for it to get hot. With an instant water heater under your sink, you’ll have your hot water as soon as you turn on the tap! You can also use something like a kettle to get hot water on the go. Some models can boil water in under a minute and simply plug into the wall.
8. CHECK YOUR TOILETS FOR LEAKAGE
There are many ways that toilets waste water, but leaky ones are a huge ordeal. Just from the toilet alone, you could be saving 500 gallons of water each day. You heard correctly…EACH DAY. If you’re unsure of the current status of your toilet, you can use a dye tablet or give us a call at ProFlo so we can diagnose and repair for you.
9. SWITCH TO A LOW-FLOW TOILET OPTION
Just like with your shower, a low-flow toilet can save you so much money. Flushing a traditional toilet uses an average of 3.6 gallons of water PER FLUSH. That’s so much water literally going to waste. Low-flow toilet models tend to use 2 gallons less and newer is almost always better. ProFlo can help you make the switch if you find yourself needed assistance.
10. BECOME REGULAR LEAK HUNTERS
An opening as little as 1/16 of an inch can waste over 100 gallons per day in your home. Take the time to walk around your home and make sure all faucets, pipes, toilets, hoses, and showers are running the way they are intended. No leaky faucets, draining toilets, and HEY…you might catch any slab leaks before they happen as well. Many leaky faucets are an easy fix, but ProFlo also provides professionals to diagnose your home for you as well.
And just like that, you’ve saved A TON of precious water and A TON of even more precious money. If you are interested in learning more about how ProFlow can help your household save more water via shower, toilet, faucet, and leaks, please free to give us a call and get your free estimate.
